Are you patriotic? What does being patriotic mean to you?
Patriotic? Oh yes, I am!
Anyway, it’s my first post of the year so it’s only proper I say, Happy New Year!
I love to patronise stuff that are made in Ghana and that is how I exhibit my patriotism. When I hear things like Ghanaians naturally have a taste for foreign goods, my heart breaks. Who taught us to? And who says we can’t change? Take rice grown in Ghana for example. That’s all I buy and it works for me. What I find interesting is that people who buy premium foreign rice will have a taste of broken Ghanaian rice and complain. That’s not a good comparison to make in my opinion. Why don’t you try the premium Ghanaian rice?
The thing is, if we look at each purchase as an opportunity to grow our economy, it makes a whole world of difference. It’s no secret that the unemployment rate in Ghana continues to rise. Now imagine we all went in for rice made in Ghana and investment is pushed into this sector as a result. That’s a lot of jobs created! And not just strictly agric jobs – from drone pilot to apply fertiliser, to a graphic designer to design packaging, there’ll be a job for a great deal of folks.
Whenever I see kids celebrating career day, I imagine a factory that produces these clothes right here in Ghana! What a difference that will make!
I think about these things a lot and sometimes feel discouraged that I may never see them happen in my lifetime. But I continue to contribute in my own small way by purchasing stuff made in Ghana as often as possible.
How about you?
